August 31, 2025 — US president William McKinley died in 1901 of gunshot wounds that modern medicine could easily have handled. Without x-rays, his doctors couldn’t find the second bullet, and without antibiotics, they couldn’t fight the sepsis that set in and killed him.

Donald Trump wants to Make America Great Again [MAGA].His idea of when America was great is evidently the McKinley Administration of 1897-1901.  Why? Trump in February 2025: “He was a strong believer in tariffs, and we were actually probably wealthiest of any time, relatively speaking, at any point in the history of our country.”  (The McKinley Tariff dated from 1890, when he was a Senator.  During his presidency, he himself turned against tariffs.) read more

Vaccination Mandates Are Not Government Over-reach

January 28, 2022 — The US Supreme Court on January 13 blocked President Joe Biden’s attempt to mandate that businesses must require their employees to be vaccinated against the coronavirus or else wear masks and be tested regularly.  This “emergency standard” was to have been applied by the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration, carrying out its responsibility under long-standing legislation to protect workers facing serious danger in the workplace.

In some countries, governments have imposed vaccine mandates on their entire populations, or at least on all workers.  They include Austria, Ecuador, and Indonesia.  Germany is currently deciding on a mandate.  Many more, like Italy, have imposed the requirement on subsets of the population, such as health workers or those over 50. read more

The G20 agenda, as the pandemic continues

August 28, 2021 — Italy hosts the G20 this year.  The 2021 Summit of the Heads of Government will take place in Rome in October. Officials of member countries, including the finance ministers and central bank governors, are preparing.

The G20 meeting will come at a time of great uncertainty as concerns the health and economic effects of the pandemic, midway through its 2nd year.  Although the mechanisms of international cooperation have been badly bruised by events of recent years, they are more important than ever, in light of the interconnectedness across nations that the pandemic so vividly demonstrates. read more
